Well, that depends a bit on your definition of "griefing", doesn't it? It's neither uncommon nor unreasonable to speak of griefing as destroying people's stuff just for the fun of destroying them rather than for material, political or other indirect gain, and that is clearly a thing in Haven.

I'm pretty sure there are people who've played this game, soft as can be, without ever dying. There's probably law-speakers who violated every rule about 'how to run a village' short of actually going out on recruiting campaigns to inadvertently yet specifically attract people interested in bringing it all to ruin, and yet who still managed to survive peacefully until they got bored.

I'm also pretty sure that for every village that's been destroyed by raiders, there's been a village that's been destroyed by a tin pot dictatorship that kept yelling at them to play harder and be harder without any evidence that their patrols, drills, and tedious security precautions were anything other than posturing, so that their villagers just all got fed up. It's not worth it to invest so much in defending yourself that you don't get to enjoy yourself... though that does mean it's good to accept that you could lose everything in this game even if it transpires that you never do.

If you can't enjoy playing a game except by obtaining in-game possessions, achievements, attributes, and skills, not only is H&H not for you, MMORPGs in general are not for you. Every MMORPG is run by a server you don't own, absolutely nothing in them belongs to you, and you can and will lose everything (or, more frequently, have it devalued to worthlessness when a new 'tier' is added) within a decade, and quite possibly within two years. Games are meant to be fun, not a form of unpaid labour, the difference is in how you approach them.

Bampfylde used to roam around attacking faction perps with his main char and he never died. I'm still amazed by that feat. That means survival is possible if you have the right amount of skill, luck, and determination. Which probably also works for real life.

That's a good explanation. I wonder how many of the people who claim that the game is boring wouldn't fit in that category.

Jorb and Loftar masturbate every time a village is raided.
