Don't have cupboards full of wrought (particularly if you only have a palisade), have alts full of wrought.

Whilst this is, ofc, sound advice, the raiders still won't know he hasn't got cupboards full of wrought. It won't prevent a break in.

Personally I would secure a cave every time, I start my game in a cave, but in earlier worlds when I didn't realise this was the way to go, I waited to build my mineshaft, erecting the b/wall first - I had a cave further away where I got the iron from. It was a huge pain in the butt going back and forth which is what made me change to starting in a cave. Having a secure cave system has other benefits too in that you build all your industry down there where no-one can see it and just have a small farming area above ground. You expand this later when you build your b/walls and expand your village.
