Uhm, if anything, maille (not CHAIN mail :)) is completely uneffective against hammers, and protects very nicely against anything else under battle conditions (as in: You don't get hit from an arrow from 20m distance and you get hit in a perfect 90° arc). I know that as an experienced maillemaker (in real life...). Wheras plate is pretty much completely impervious to every cutting weapon, protects even from those very nicely hitting unrealistic arrows (depends on the test though, really) and still somewhat effective against maces and such.
(Not the helmet though. I tell you, in a greathelmet [enclosing your whole head], getting hit by even a rattan stick is agony. Your head feels like a bell.
