Just use them where you would need the string. So for example if you want the spindly taproot to be a fishing line, left click the spindly taproot in your inventory and then rightclick the square that shows the top half of the fishing rod. If you want to make a dream catcher simply start the dream catcher with a couple of branches and then shift click on the spindly taproot to have it transfer over.
