In this sense, does ground area mean grass alone? Say, if you plant a tree right next to a paved area, will it automatically be stunted even if there's open grass area on its other three sides?

Please ignore the specific numbers -- it was just a mathematical example to show what I meant by "length-wise". Is there anything else that is unclear about it?

Trees do not care about the tiles around them. They only care about the tile they stand on, which determines their speed of growth.

Asked in another way:
What can stunt a tree if it's in it's growing area?

Buildings for sure, and carryables too afaik.

Anything else?

Paved ground doesn't stunt trees. You should even be able to plant trees in them.

So, we've established that area and not tiles determines whether a tree is stunted or not. However, my hearthling seems to be lacking a measuring tape so... how many tiles is that?

Put another way, in what pattern can I plant trees so they don't stunt? So far I've planted them with a pretty generous buffer zone but I'd like to be more efficient.

I am wondering if trees that are planted too close together and come out stunted can be thinned to allow the remaining trees to grow, or will remaining trees remain stunted even after you thin them out?

A stunted tree will remain as such. This gets annoying when you realize there is no hitbox on sprouting trees, so it is impossible to remove the stunted babies, which, by the way, is a cool name for a band. 3 nights only, the Stunted Babies!

What does "area against the ground" mean? the surface area of the sprite, the dimensions of the maximum extension of the sprite, something with a behind-the-curtain bounding box?
