You need the skill 'Locks and Bolts'

To acquire it you need 'Stone Working' then 'Metal Working', 'Lumberjacking' then 'Carpentry' then 'Wheelmaking' then 'Basic Mechanics' and finally 'Locks and Bolts'. A lot of LP

Another tip to protect Property is leaving places nearby rivers, many plp explores using just the river.

You don't actually. I build a palisade around my homestead, main gate and all, without that skill. I just can't make a duplicate of the key, but since I don't have access to metal anyhow that's nothing to worry 'bout.

Not sure but dont you need metal for lock and gates?

Cupboards can't be lifted unless they are empty.
Chests are the best option, but require metal.
Straw baskets, if you have that.
