No, it was just a man in green clothes, wearing a silly long blue hat, curled up on my bed...

And it was me! :'(

other than tripping you up running from a bear or pulling a wagon, what exactly is the use of rats and frogs?

You can actually kill them. And you can gain initiative coins by doing it.

However this use is a dev oversight invented by cunning players with too much time on their hands. Their primary use is, as you thought, to trip you up.

if you get your stealth up over lvl 10, a bear can come up on you and you have time to 'port out before he gets you. anybody else found this to be true?

somebody tell gaskin (if hes still playing) that if you look for the square gray areas on your map, there is usually some sort of settlement and sometimes friendly players. or at least some who dont mind if you throw your fire down in "their" territory.

I don't think this is true. I have been told stealth is *only* for the purpose of leaving harder to see crime scents, and the only players who need to raise stealth at all are the ones who intend to commit criminal acts -including rangers who want to commit judicial executions.

I have noticed that bears can be very myopic at times. Not long ago one of them chased one of my alts into his house. When he got bored and hungry the alt stepped out again, to find himself nose to nose with a bear on his doorstep. He popped back in doors again. After doing this twice without the bear seeming to notice him in any way he sidled around to the side of his house instead and then went to do farm chores. The bear remained snuffling on his doormat for another ten minutes before it wandered off to get tangled in his drying racks.

Also, I think if you don't move the bear has a much lower chance of perceiving you. But my usual technique of trying to avoid bears that want to munch on me is to step rapidly behind a tree, stump, afk noob or other soft cover and then to back away diagonally keeping hidden. This seems to work very well for me.
