Actually, you started the game early.
The reset is expected on the 27th of February.... or however much later after that it takes for the devs to be ready to do it. In the meantime almost no one is playing. Knowing that in two days everything: characters, maps, lp etc gets wiped is poor incentive to grind upward. I'm still playing because I'm now doing the variation of "Can a brand new noobie character kill a bear before the map reset?" and similar challenges.
Unfortunately to see rust root you need a minimum of 50 in combined exploration-perception. That means you're still three points too low. And at that point you will just begin to be able to see them, but you won't see very many. It'll be odds like every time your roll a one on a d-20. Of course you can maximize your chances by covering a lot of territory -by boat is the most time efficient way- so it will be like rolling your d-20 100 times.
The good news is that if you are in an area that doesn't have many people, and which has few signs of settlement, your chances of finding a mine go up. In the older center of the map all the mines are found. The further out you go the best chance you have of finding one.
Don't forget to carry a block in inventory when you prospect! That's what makes the build mine here signpost pop up when you are close enough.
