you have to fish at a fishing spot. otherwise the character just pulls the line back without catching anything and without getting LP.

In summary:
1. Make sure the fishing pole is equiped with all components. To check, place pole in inventory, right click and select 'unequip'. Check that there is a line (taproot etc,), a hook and a lure/bait. You can equip the components in any order be left clicking from inventory and right clicking the fishing pole. Now that you know the fishing pole has all components...
2. If you are still not catching anything, then it is because there are no fish where you are casting. Look out for jumping fish in the water and cast there. They jump every couple of seconds in a spot, so don't travel too fast as you'll likely miss it. In my experience thusfar, fishing spots are more common and easier to find in lakes... as a matter of fact I have not come accross a single fishing spot in a river.

were there fishes jumping in the water in that shallow area? if yes, you've hit a major jackpot. if no, seems either a bug or a new feature.

Sarge, I beg to differ. I've seen entirely fish-less lakes, but frequently found fishing spots in rivers, although always in deep water.

Well, that sounds pretty cool then, it contributes a little to the 'regional differences' feel that is a big aim for the future... afaik.

I've read through lots of stuff but can't get my fishing pole equipped. I have in my inventory a fishing pole, a spindly taproot, a bone hook and both worms and a pinecone plug. The wiki says

The line, hook, and lure/bait are added to the pole by left clicking on the item and then right clicking on the top half of the fishing pole.

But when I left-click on the taproot, I only get "eat" as an option and clicking on the top part of the pole does nothing. Neither of the worms, hook or pinecone plug do anything at all when I left-click, then when I try to click the top of the pole just to try, it selects the pole.

I'm a bit stuck. I've read through the forums too, but people seem to be able to equip themselves and just have trouble finding fish. I can't even get that far. Any help?

are your left and right mouse buttons reversed or something, left clicking should put the item on the cursor, not open a menu
