Only when dex is lower than clay quality.

At 49 dex I had q45 clay capped to q43. So much for "only if lower".

(45 + 49) / 2 = 47, not 43, so it *should* have turned out q45. Math here simply doesn't add up, so either you got one of the numbers wrong (I'm betting on clay q), or we have a bug on our hands. Or 43 is the q of the burned pot, which is completely irrelevant for this discussion.

No, q43 was an actual clay q. I was with a friend (his DEX i dunno, but it is far over 80), and he got q45 from the same spot.
I`d have to experiment a bit on that I guess.

I also had some dex modifying items on me (rings that I can remember, maybe something else) - maybe their bonuses were not taken into account?

Situation was as follows: he brings me to spot to show me where to dig stuff. Gets some q45 clay, goes to put it in a chest. I take his place (yes, exact tile) and all like "wtf oO you said it was q45", getting q43 clay. Go over where he put it his batch in chest and yep, q45 it is. He comes back to spot and too is like "wtf, no, it`s still q45, ah well, w/e, dig it as it comes".

My best bet is that equipment bonuses were not taken into account (or only partly taken into account).

Now I wonder if I would be able to repeat that experiment, as I upped dex since then a bit...

That shouldn't be right. I started right next to a water q spot. When I had 10 in all stats and no skills, I got q 46 water from it. I still get q46 water there, even though I've boosted my stats a fair deal.
