When I was finding our mines I was barelyfinding any rustroot, so I made the most of it by pasting together minimaps, prospecting at three spots and then triangulating the position. If 1% was anything but 10 tiles I wouldn't have pinpointed the mines that way. Since I once managed to fail starting a mine construction site because I was standing right on top of the spot, I think it's safe to say that it is indeed 10 tiles for every 1%.

Seems accurate then, since a square would give fairly weird results in that case. Wish I'd thought of it when I was wandering around randomly and getting 80% pings...35 per x 50 exploration = plenty of rustroot, though.

so... you drink(?) the extract, and you see it on the ground as a splotch of some sort, does it show on your mini map, and how longs it last?wiki doesn't say

Find red splotchy-looking thing on the ground with (perception x exploration) >= 400. It's rustroot, which is used with the recipe given by Prospecting to make rustroot extract. Use the Prospect action, which expends 0.1L of rustroot extract (you get 0.4L per rustroot) to get a popup saying how close any existing mines are (max distance away = 1000 tiles; for example, it will say 95% if you are ~50 tiles away from the mine, or 1% if you're ~990 tiles away). The popup will stay up until you log out or close it, for the record.

Beyond that...no, the minimap isn't involved in prospecting. It doesn't tell you the direction of the mine, either; you just have to move around somehow and try again to figure out whether you're closer or farther.

P.S. - When you prospect while "99%" close to a mine, your character will automatically walk straight to it and put down a mine construction sign on it. Needs 100 wood blocks, so grab one once you get really close; if you walk away without a block in the site, you'll have to prospect it again.

jorb wrote:New feature, Prospecting: To build mines you now have to find minepoints. Do this by getting the Prospecting skill. The rest of the process involves making a specific herbal extract and using it to determine, abstractly, where the closest mine point is. You'll be able to detect a mining spot 1000 tiles away. When you find one, a construction object will be placed for the mine. Available metals are: Gold, Silver, Copper, Iron and Tin.

Official dev description. It suggests a radius but doesn't say it explicitly. Fortunately, triangulation confirmed it.

the wiki has confermed finds at per*exp=270 for the record, but i can't imagine it being very common at the lvl

Fair enough, I was working off memory of popular rumors. I rarely found them while around 400...but 800+ seems to make them so common that I can prospect along rivers indefinitely.
