You have timers on crops and I bet there are a lot more planted crops out there than there are planted treees... Why not just make the trees without fruits/ branches whatever get a timer that stops once it grows back...

Which obviously requires a distinction between planted trees and non-planted trees, and right now there is no such distinction.

Why would it need a distinction? :| The planted trees comment was about the relative number of used trees not as a distinguishing factor. The removal of branches/ fruits is something you clearly store for the tree so a timer could be attached. It doesn't need to be 100% precise either if it would help distribute processing power to times where there are fewer people logged in. Something like the tree will fully regen after 48/72 h. When you modify the tree (pick something off it) the server would allocate a time together with other trees when they will get updated as long as it is in the necessary interval. I don't believe such a thing will pose that much of a drain on the system.

I can also go along with the beehive suggestion since that will reduce the amount of trees affected even more.

I meant a distinction in code, not in graphics. Planted trees are, in that case, a special case. Special cases should generally be avoided.

I'm not necessarily saying I disagree with you, merely pointing out that in that case we need to distinguish between them.

I'm putting this thread on my todo-list for friday, and we'll see what that leads to. :)

By this thread I meant the beehive idea as well. I recall loftar saying he wasn't immediately opposed to it.

You don't need to distinguish :P

When a tree has a branch or fruit or whatever picked off of it, it enters the "incomplete" trees list. When it regenerates everything or is cut down, it's taken off the list. The function that regenerates branches etc. just processes the trees on the list.

I'd wager there's more tiles of growing crops than there are trees with missing branches at any one time.
