A "Claim" covers your land and renders walking, building, demolishing and taking stuff on this land criminal actions. That means that players cannot just walk by and do what they want without leaving any trace, but that they would first have to actively make the decision to commit a crime. By committing a crime, they'd leave behind a "scent" which would allow rangers to track down the criminal. The worse a crime, the longer it's scent lasts.
While that culls away the curious and the cheeky visitors, it would still be no obstacle to anybody who isn't afraid of punishment. If you want to know more, check "Ranging" and "Scent" in the Haven Wiki.

To claim your land, you need the skill "Yeomanry", which requires "Will To Power" and "Farming". You can buy "Farming" after getting the skill "Plants Lore".

Ahh thank you! :D Makes a lot more sense now.

I'll be joining the IRC. My job gives me a LOT of time to spend online and this game seems to be pretty much exactly what I was looking for so I'm sure I'll be on here a lot. :P

There are a few ways you can obtain some food while your 5 bread last.

  1. Find broad-leaf forest region and taking apples, mulberries, and nuts.
  2. Obtain Foraging and increasing exploration to around 6 to find taproots and chantrelles to eat. Taproot are also used as strings.
  3. Obtain Hunting and go to a grassland, moor, or heathland which are green yellow and pink respectively and hunt for chickens.
  4. If you have both foraging and hunting, you can opt for fishing as well as you already have the pole and can get the string from taproot and bone fron chicken/rabbit. You only need a pinecone (from the triangular shaped fir tree) and a birchbark (round tree with white bark). Alternatively you can get stonework and make rock lobsters as well as they are made from chipping stones from the large boulders.
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

Being successful isn't just about hard work and succeeding, it is also about picking yourself up when you fail.
