Here's the idea when it comes to the wiki. It contains information. Ideally, it would be entirely correct, contain anything anybody wanted to know, and the "How do I?" section might be entirely unnecessary. Sure, there are people like Darkren who spend a ton of time on it, scanning as you say, to try to make it better, but most people aren't like that. The thing is that if you would just make small edits when you do notice something is wrong (like when somebody mentions it's wrong in the thread) then in the end you might actually put out less effort by fixing it than by repeatedly answering questions.
Think of the wiki as a proactive version of this forum section. It also makes it easier on the new players who no longer need to wait for a reply, and can instead just "look it up". This means more of them will have a better time early on and might stay. The wiki's a good resource for the game in general, and you don't have to help with it if you don't want to, but if you don't, then it's kind of silly to bitch about it being incorrect, or expect other people to fix it when you won't.
