you need explore and survival firstley, with explore you will be able to see things, like spinalroots (can be eaten and used for string to make stuff) find chantarells (can be eaten and can be used in some baking recepies) with higher explore you will eventually be able to see a plant (that you can pic and dry on a drying rack or a herbtable to get various crop seeds), you will also be able to se fish and clams and cavebulbs (only in caves) and rustroot (needed to find mines) it helps you to be able to see criminal scents and some other stuff. so what you are able to see depends on your Explore level.

Survival will help you in making the meat you roast gain better quality aswell as animal hides, meat and collecting bones from animals you kill (also dependant on the quality of the sharp tool you used to butcher it), it will also help you when you forage if your suvival is very low anything you pic will also become low quality hence drag the actual quality down, make it atleast 10 since most sourses are ql 10, if you make it even 11 you may also get a clue that the close aria where you picced the chant for example might be higher level then 10, if your survival is exaktley 10 the chant will be 10 aswell even if the actual ql was a lot higher, and you might not get that clue if your survival is not higher then 10.

i would start with those two skill values, then get marksmen to around 20-25 for starters, make a sling, and hunt low level animals, great for gaining LP. and then start getting base value of atleast 10 for starters in carpentry, farming and so on to avoid lowering quality of everything.

smithing, stealth, mele, dont bother with these until a bit later. if you do not have a mine yet there is no need for smithing at this point at all.

another question about skills. Namely cartography. How does it work?

Also, do you need cartography to get your junk on the map? We've had a house for a day now, a plot for two days, and recently claimed the land. I've seen unclaimed land appear on the minimap, why hasn't ours yet?

I want to be able to find it easier :(

Things appear on the map after the map gets updated.

Cartography is just to actually make maps.

How often does the map get updated then?

And are cartography maps any helpful? Or are there any other ways to get maps(I've seen maps made out of screenshots of the minimap, but they were all incomplete.)?

Not sure of exactly how often, I've heard once a day, never cared enough to time it...
Cartography is seen as too much a pain in the ass by most and hearing that the maps contribute to lag(and thus are wiped if not viewed for a certain amount of time) stops most dead in their tracks.

There's a special client that has mapping functions, most people use it.

Don't think it's forbidden. Grab the dgladkov archive from here: http://pyrofyr.net/Stuff/Haven/Client/

Extract the files somewhere and load it up. It will dump every minimap square it retreives as you travel. They won't have any sort of sequential naming, though, so if you don't stitch them together as you go you'll soon find yourself with the most epic jigsaw puzzle ever created. :D

The Q of the league is base of the Q of the tanning tub, and the water and bark put inside it (as far as I know).
The Q of the items you make out of leather is based of Sewing.
