you need to plow it first

make a wooden plow, doing it by hand is not something recomended.

Yeah I noticed that, haha.

I found a nice place by the river too. Only problem is I have to halt any work I'm doing in case a boar roams nearby. When I claim land do they stop bothering me?

No, claims will not prevent boar attacks. They do, however, stop them from SPAWNING on your claim. I suggest building the house first and then when a boar comes by run in and wait for it to wander off.

Boars are hellspawn and have nothing but contempt for you and your feeble attempts at taming their land. Until you stride with the gods and touch the heavens with the acquisition of proper weapons and armor and stuff, I presume.

No. Also, I know you probably don't want to think about this sort of thing so early, but you should pick a safer location to settle. Riverside settlements are prime targets for griefers and raiders, and when they find you, it won't matter to them that you're a newbie. Just one of the harsher side-effects of such an open game, I'm afraid. :)

animals do not move when there are no people to see them move (i AM serious)

so if you run into your house chances are you will be stuck there for at least 30mins till the boar despawns, a simple fence around your claims prevents them form spawning inside and from wandering inside

^ Pretty much. When I first started that was my mistake as well. Lakes and rivers are tempting but they aren't good places to settle. If you really, really want to be close to a water body I suggest making sure your settlement can't be seen from the river (on the minimap, I mean).

Thanks for the headsup on the river. My Hearthfire is still there, so I'll have to wait until I get a beautiful dream in my dreamcatcher before I can go farther inland. Oh, and is there a way other than trespassing to get onto somebody's land? I only want to ask them if I could bum some seeds off them.

If you are in a party with the owner of the claim, you override the claim.

If you just want to walk on the land (and not be able to look at any containers, enter houses or take stuff), just turn on Criminal Acts in the Adventure menu.

Oh, OK. Thanks guys, you've been a great help.

My only concern is food though. I'm hardly keeping up with apples, and the occasional rabbit. I got fishing, but apparently fish are a limited resource or something?
