how do i feed the animal once home in the pen, do i need a trough or just green grass?

Troughs are better.

Grass always counts as q10 food and won't last long, i've noted my cows taking hit points to starvation even when there is grass under them if their troughs are empty.

Search around a bit, you'll find a some stuff on the matter.

Chickens and rabbits can still spawn on claimed land. I occasionally log in to find a stray chicken running around in the middle of my pretty large, palisaded, fully claimed homestead.

Could be they were running from foxes and ended on your claim. I noticed that chickens can go thru walls :lol:
