Will a hive's production be cut in half if you build another hive next to it so that two hives are covering the same area, or no?

Cut in half? No.
I don't know the details, but you will make more profit with more hives.
At least up to a certain number of hives.

Hives have a base rate at which they generate wax and honey, irrespective of nearby plants. Plants can however only be "pollinated" once by a hive. Two hives will only count one tile of planted wheat once for wax and honey generation.
