i think there used to be people saying they would hunt down people for free, ie.. free rangers.

Some might still be around.

Just summon the perpetrator to get his name. If you don't knock him out or kill him, you only leave an assault clue, which can't be used to summon you. Then post the name of your thief. If it's a well-known one, there's a better chance that someone will offer you to kill him, especially if that thief also stole from that someone. Or you might find other victims of that thief, and you guys can pool together to give a bounty for his death.

But what are typical bounties? Because I have to admit, I don't exactly have very much, and while I did lose some metal stuff, meh. My solution has been to move all my valuables into town, where I can't put a claim anyways (claims don't work underground), because we're less likely to have someone try to rob us than, uh, just kill us or something. I'll summon him to catch his name, and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thieves without hearth fires are typically alts that have been ground up to get the black arts. Killing him likely won't get you your gear back, nor will it stop whoever owned that alt from steeling from you again.

This is why I reckon the black arts should all be over 10k each, possibly up to 20k. That's a fair bit of grinding to lose.

Also once Loftar updates inventories it should become more possible to track your belongings themselves rather than the person who nicked em, so you could finger whoever ended up with the stolen goods.

Thats kinda worrisome tho. If I traded some BBBs for a B12 axe, and then Raeph (for example) shows up with clues proving that I have his stolen axe and kills me, that would be...kinda crappy.
Actually, there would be a whole level of exploit here. Again solely for example, lets say I don`t like player A. so I make an alt, chat with him, grind up, then use alt to steal some stuff from player B. So then I take the stuff I stole and trade it to player A for some other stuff. Then player B, and maybe his allies, hunts down player A and death ensues. An easy way to off people way more powerful than myself, with no risk to myself.

I presume that tracking the item would point to the holder of it, and tracking the perpetrator would point to the character that did the actual theft.

Ah, so there would be 3 options? 1) track perp 2) track item 3) track perps hearth
That would be good, although not completely avoiding the problem i mentioned before.

Colbear wrote:So, if someone steals from me, I can't retaliate against him, because then someone else would kill me for doing so, right? This guy doesn't have a hearth, so I should be able to summon him at the ring of brogdor? What would I click on in this case? Just the ground in the ring?

(Basically, here's my situation: I just got tracking, so I've turned it on, and there's a ton of theft scents on my property and some stuff's missing. The guy doesn't have a hearth, and I don't have many combat skills anyways, but I should in theory be able to defeat him if hes logged out, but obviously I won't do that if someone else is just going to come over and kill me. Are there any suggestions on what I should do?)

This sounds very familiar, except that when I tracked my clues, I found someone had already killed the alt that did the damage. It sucks, and you have my sympathy.

As to what to do - well, alts rarely have the strength to break through palisades, never mind brick walls. You'll get laughed at on the forums for "turtling," but it's the most effective solution I've found. And if you make sure your walls are entirely within a claim, then trying to break through leaves a vandalism clue - which is summonable - and odds are they'll have to bring on their real character to do that damage, making it vulnerable to offline summoning.
