People are still able to spawn next to you if they guess your HS, but it's impossible for anyone to force summon you without breaking your walls. The max sight range is something like 35-40 tiles. So if you're farther than that inward then they won't be able to see your HF from the wall.

true, but that is the thing you start worrying about if you are to leave scents, isnt it?
people can still grief you with your outside HF when your HS is easy enough to guess or get lucky.

Worried about death

Postby kserswilldie » Sat May 21, 2011 9:16 pm

Hey I'm having a lot of fun on this game and my character
I've got a little house set up and some goals to accomplish
But after reading some threads I've begun to worry about dying
I've got enders client, not really worried about a random boar/bear attack
But other players have got me worried
So my question is;
What can I do to protect myself from randomly dying to a griefer?
Is max range enders & hearthing at the first sign of danger going to be enough?
Can I do anything to prevent dying in my sleep?

For the most part, yes. It's a hell of a way to live, but it's also pretty safe.

And you can't be killed while you're offline (unless you've committed certain crimes).

I think I can manage that...

Let's say someone shoots you or whatever, and you don't die, can you hearth or you can't cause you're in combat?

A detailed section about death will be created at some point. Frankly, death is a part of this game. It will happen to you at some point most likely if you continue to play this game. The biggest keys to "surviving" death is minimizing the damage. Having a claim for that starting LP so you can get back foraging is critical. Not leaving your keys on your character will minimize the destruction you receive if it's a griefer.

Hearthing at first sight of danger is a great step. Getting a palisade up is critical to surviving griefers. You'll want to invest in 200-300 ua in the coming months to help discourage casual griefers from killing you, and knowledge of the combat system is a good way to go.

Edit: You can't hearth in combat, but carrying 2-3 water flasks on you with good Q water will give you a chance of outrunning them on foot. If you break combat you can hearth immediately after. Just be warned, griefers are prepared to chase people down, so you'll want more than just a single flask.

Wouldn't a palisade just dissuade a larger % of griefers from destroying/stealing my stuff? Or would I be able to hide behind it or something?

The answer is, "Yes."

Having a palisade means that anyone wanting to break in will need high strength or take the time to build a palisade. This assumes that you take reasonable precautions in security. Failure to protect keys is just like not having a palisade--and probably better off without one if you do lose a key and get stuck inside. However, you can only effectively hide behind it if you make it big enough so that people can't snipe at you while working. Otherwise, you'll be stuck inside a house or forced to log off if someone does wander by looking to do ill.
