The map needs to unload. There is no set time for how long it takes to unload (depending on the server stress at any given moment the maps will load/unload at different rates). On a normal day, map segments unload after around 10-15 minutes. From experience I reckon map chunks load in 4x4 minimaps segments

Clay is relatively rare in the grand scheme of things. If you're digging on the shore you'll probably only find clay on about 5% of all available shore tiles. That said, once you do find a node you should be able to dig up quite a bit of clay depending on the quality of the node.

Does the Q of bricks/steel/etc... matter when building a brick wall?

Wallgrade tends to mean really low quality, as the sole purpose of said bricks/steel/wrought is for a brick wall in which quality doesn't matter.

This wasn't very well answered, so here's a bit better: like many things, it depends. If you put it up by yourself, you shoulder all the costs for establishing a village by yourself. That means 30k for Lawspeaking, another 30k LP for founding the village. If you're relatively active, you'll make more than enough LP to keep up the authority. I could keep up a 500k Auth village by myself and my farmer alt last world.

As far as politically, you have a bit more attention because you get that big red skull on the map. This could keep some people away, however, it could attract some raiders. It's extremely useful to have as you can build crossroads and never use keys again. You can trade with other villages by teleporting alts back and forth. All in all, I say it's worth the trouble. You might want to consider getting bricks together for a brickwall as quickly as possible so as to ward off all but the worst of raids.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I finished a palisade started by someone else (abandoned house with runestone saying they had been killed). I made the gate and the game gave me the key. When I try to use the key (left click on key, right click on gate) the game tells me I do not have the right key for the gate. What am I doing wrong?

it's this issue of people mistaking convenience for laziness or "casual" gameplay, . . . there is no reason why not to have sacks . . .
