I'd say it's to show the size of the bottom of a minehole. Of course, it'd be just as easy to turn on grid view in Ender's (Ctrl+g) and show the minehole itself.

I'm asking this because recently I tried to tease him to a further location but he kept healing himself.

Also, when they heal 100, does it mean hard life? Soft life?

I believe that I read somewhere that animals don't have separate HHP and SHP; it's all one HP bar. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.

Also, the deer will always continue to heal himself, no matter how far away he is from his herd. The point of luring him away from them is to stop his herd from healing him. A deer with 4 buddies has five times the health regen of a solitary deer.
