Let me give a complete answer as he don't gets the mining system.
You must find an ore node to find ore. If stone drops beneath you this means you're not at a node. If ore appears in your inv you are.
Keep mining for some time at one tile for it to become floor. One tile can contain multiple ore.

They hurt but they're not certain death. Definitely something to be careful of and to always wear a mining helmet to protect against partially.
On lower levels they're pretty certain death if you're not careful.

No, it's a bit further away, I need to get to it first. But how many times do I have to mine a tile exactly for it to become floor? Is it random?

Unless you KNOW that there's ore behind that wall, you're better off moving on down the cave a ways and trying another spot. I try not to go farther than about 10-20 tiles when testing as many of the nodes I've found only intersect the cave for as little as 5-10 tiles.

It's not a cave, it's a minehole. The ore I prospected is a bit further away. I kinda underestimated the time it would take to mine through one tile, I thought it would be much faster.
