the world is huge, its sometimes hard to find people...to give a relative size of world, I once travelled an hour and a half by boat to do a trade with someone(we met at the halfway point between us) and we're both near the center of the map.
there are tons of forests, there are lots of other things, if you're truely on an island it will be hard to tell exactly where you are...I suggest you start foraging your island, get some lp start working on basics, and when you can build a boat(or find 1 on the shore) start exploring your rivers. you'll want to discover everything you can to get quick lp to start, and start building/crafting things to get more. the signposts(pile of wood is a fire) were put there by someone trying to trap an animal to kill so animals spawn in your area atleast(don't go pulling hair or trying to milk or you'll get killed) but try to grab a rabbit or chicken.
if you're truely lost, you can click on adventure->travel->hearth fire and you'll automaticly be returned to your hf so its good to keep it near where you're working. also a suggestion, don't build near a village. villages can expand over you and take your stuff(if you don't have yeomanry they don't even need to expand over you).
