How would I place a crossroad somewhere nowhere near my village? Say the edge of a river for easy boat transportation. Is this even possible ?

It would need to be under the village's "Influence" (the village's claim). You say it is nowhere near your village, then you can't unless you feel like expanding your village's influence towards the location.

You also will need to be either lawspeaker or chieftain to preform this task.

Why does this game spawn you in a random location? Why can't I find anyone else? This is not very exciting for a newbie I can't even find anyone else, and I can't find any established towns. Where do I go?

Try Dwarves & Thieves and find some friends to play with.

You can spawn in where your friends in if you know their Hearth Secret

In a game when some total stranger is likely to kill you, why would you want to spawn some place centrally located? While this is a bit of a crafting game, it's as much a survival game. You're not going to survive long when the next guy over might see you as crowding his "territory."

Where do you go? Read the guides stickied in the forum. Go wherever you want. Do what you want. Just be careful of who you cross paths with.

FYI, be careful who you sign up with. There's a few people that will take in new players and treat them right, but most of the others will just work your ass. You'll learn 10x more on your own than as some dude's slave.

I have Hearth Magic and a bunch of the starter skills. I've discovered branches and I believe Spindly Taproot. Why can I not build a dream catcher? Am I missing some prerequisite?

Collect another string. Odds are you didn't get the discovery for it. Any string should work.

If your inventory was full when you foraged the string, then it does not count as being discovered. If it did not land in your inventory when you foraged it then it'll hit the ground and not unlock anything for you.

Given I'm a new player, the problem I've been having is that string is hard to find and I have a low exploration skill with starter perception levels. I've been looking all over for Spindly Taproot and the one time I did find it, I messed it up. Go figure.

That's okay, you just have to keep at it. The fun of the early game is that everything is so wild, dangerous, and hard to come by. Abundance makes the end game kind of boring, in my opinion. Good luck. =)
