This conflict of information is owning me even more. I'd go out and test this myself but I'd have to find a minehole first. :?

Lies.

Find me a clay mine, or a mine WITHOUT metals. I challenge you. Also, i was beside a mine that was brickwalled, but not claimed, and tried the rustroot, nothing. So that's a lie and misinformation sir.

I meant that he can't find mines that are on personal or village claims.

I didn't know about clay mines, nor about palisade-walled mines. That's good to know.

I think i was a little unclear. There are actually no clay mines (that i know of). You can find cave clay from caves in shallow waters, but no mines dedicated to clay. What i meant is that there aren't any mines without metals as of now.

If a mine hole hasn't been built yet (requires 100 wood blocks I think), then you can prospect it (even if it's partially built). You can prospect from boats just fine. If a mine hole has been built (claimed or not), you can't detect it with prospecting at all.
When you're prospecting, it'll give you a message like "Tin: 5% Copper: 10%" if such mines are within the prospecting range. You have to go closer and keep prospecting to make sure you're going the right way. If you prospect very close to the mine hole, your character will automatically walk to it and place a construction sign. You have to put a wood block into it or else it will disappear (until you prospect it like this again).
After the mine hole is built, you can go into it and mine away.

I was using Gilbertus' custom client while searching for a mine (for the automapper) and I was prospecting once around every 10 minimaps travelled, which seemed to work alright for me. Lots of the mines have probably been taken by now, so you won't find one as easily as you would've a week ago, but you probably have a pretty good chance of finding something after a few hours of searching in the new land.
RIP
