To answer your original question, Dwarf Fortress is basically this, except from the point of a god controlling a dwarf army. The controls are complicated as hell, but once you get used to them, I ehar its quite entertaining.

I know I kind of come off as unintelligent but I am bit more computer savvy than I appear. I've heard of Linux for years, but have never done in detailed research on it, after watch a few videos online, it look similar to the MAC OSX but maybe I am wrong

The Mac OS is based on Linux, yes. If you're familiar with Macs then you should be fine with Linux. Ubuntu's pretty well set up as an everyman version. It's simplified and allows people to use it without a lot of hassle.

I'd definitely try updating the graphics drivers first though. H&H shouldn't be all that demanding. It's a java app so it's higher than it would be otherwise, but it's still a low end program.

Search google for java runtime environment 1.5, the current, 1.6.3 or w/e doesn't work for me, so i downgraded my java and it works fine now. (gives an error on minecraft, but who cares, right?)

There are a few other similar games. Stuff like Wurm Online. However that's 3D and less likely to run for her. It's also a subscription based game. All the other similar games I know of, in fact, are subscription and 3D.
