Do people generally play this game solo? It would seem that progress would be faster when playing with a group, but so far I have encountered no one, although I have been robbed of my cooked fish and roots while sleeping.

Also, it seems people generally use some modified client to play this game. Is there a generally accepted preference? Where can I find these clients? What's recommended?

Will trespassing allow me on to other claims?

Yes, but you still can't do anything on enemy claims, only walk on it.

if someone for example claimed a cave entrance, trespassing will elt you enter the cave

Does it work for houses too??
And can you then take items in that house?

You need theft to steal from claims but trespassing will let you open containers and peek inside.

Keep in mind that if you start stealing stuff, people can then summon you to your hearthfire while you're offline and kill your behind. :p (They can't with tresspass, but they can still track you down.)
