need to consider the number of swamps and mountains in the area, doesnt need to be right next to your village just something you can travel to when you want to forage. 1-2 mountains and 2+ swamps is good enough
you wont really be able to tell where all the good soil/clay/water nodes are automatically when u settle in an area so you just sort of have to hope you settle in a good location for that but i wouldn't just settle randomly, find at least 1 good node of something
when we first settled it was ontop of about 35ql acre clay/ 35ql soil and we knew there was a 44ql water and 40ql ball clay node not too far away, this is what I would consider good enough things for a village location but it doesn't matter hugely because now we have 70+ water 65+ clay and 50+ soil, through cr links and just travelling
having 2+ clay nodes close by has been pretty helpful for the bricks, we usually deplete both when we make a new wall so i would recommend finding a place that has more than 1
cliffs is also another thing to consider, natural walls are better than brick so it is always nice if you can protect 1 or more sides of ur village with them
when I first started I thought sand was an important resource to be near but it really isnt, you shouldnt even bother to consider sand at all when chosing a place. I also thought being next to water would be best because water is needed a lot, but it is the opposite tbh, stay the hell away from busy rivers or youll just get raided
personally I think if your village (idol especially) can be seen on minimap from any river which is part of the whole river connection thing- with full minimap zoomed out.. then you are in dangerous place, u either should be far inland or near/at a dead-end river which ppl dont really have any reason to sail down, lakes that arent connected to any rivers are also really good for finding flotsams and safe from random sailors
