Hunting bears might have high reward, but you also gotta calculate the risk in it. Not sure if I want to rely too much on a task where I can lose weeks of work in a matter of minutes.

As a hermit you don't have much choice (so the out and about risk is still present). You kinda need the foraged curiosities, and with a good q100 sling and decent MM you can kill em quite quickly.

To reduce the risk, or better to say the loss let your main be a crafter that always stay in his walls and use a forage/hunting-alt (with only the nescessary stats and skills) to go out.

q100 sling?!

He really can't quickly make q100 sling as a hermit, it require very good surv and axe. My first quality sling(57) came from 2 bears (stripes and leather) and I had 60ish surv, used 35q water and 25ish q tubs and 19q axe. Also you need 50mm to utilize q100 sling, which is total overkill and waste of LP. Atm with this sling and 30mm bear kill is about 10 minutes anyways, which is fine in my book. Stone for good axe is basically imbossible to get outside of trade or you lucky as hell. I completely checked 4 mountains in my area (and it's huge area) and best stone I found was q28.

Also, you can snipe any animal from other side of ridge, just make sure length of ridge is about 1/2 of minigrid radius (it's actually 1/3 but better safe than sorry). This way animal pathfinding is not working.

Also q50 sling and q100 sling, difference in average shot vs bear is about 30, and bear have ~800hp, you will hardly notice difference
