Ah well idol is probably best first. See what area u wantbto be walling and think abt an area for a sniper wall incase u later down the line want one. Dont take on a huge area thats hard to defend or attracts attention or too small and area that you cant do the things u want to in the game.

As a long time Hermit who has also experiences with being in villages with others i'd suggest not to try to be a successful hermit in this world but trying to be a happy hermit. Even when playing 24/7 you won't be able to learn and manage all in one world when on your own...it takes more than one world to archive the high goal ... don't try to rush, take your time - learn and experiment - next world you'll be even starting better ...

Thanks for the tip borka, I'll try to learn as much as possible of course, that's actually why I decided to make a hermit, to learn things I can't learn if everything is already done. ^^'

I recommend no sniper wall, for two reasons

- false sense of security as most people just palisade it, which could lead to you feeling too secure and afking in your base, opening the door for someone to bash it and score an easy kill. just get used to afking inside your houses or in the middle of your base if it's big enough.
- it limits your ability to have safe encounters with other random players, as a hermit you're gonna be pretty lonely in this game, so it's both nice and very useful to have some friendly contacts in your area.

In my experience it is a mistake to think you will learn more than living in a village, ofc depending on the village you are living in. Not every village has the same policies and in most villages not everything is done, we have to make it happen.
If you are lucky enough to get to live with friendly ppl, even having separate plots system, you will have a lot of ppl to ask to, you will see what they do, will be able to look around and will learn how they work out to get resources and better Q.
When I hermited I learned much more slow, ofc as I personally did whatever I was confident and was able to get some tips, that you dont if you dont do things by yrself, but the game is so complex that never one player can do it all, and less to get a competitive outcome, even being a no-lifer.
As a hermit you have to compit with the sinergy of a bunch of ppl, and in most towns there are used bots.

If you're a new player I would definitely suggest you start out in a village. To hermit succesfully you need a lot of knowledge and experience.

Well yes. Palisades, animals, silk, copper, iron... It's not hard to do, even when you're a noob.
To be a successful hermit: Read the wiki and be persistant.

I guess it will work if you're dedicated to learning how to do it. Most of the newer players I kinned either died and quit or build a palisade, wondered what to do next, then quit.
