That's a very inefficient farm design. My own farm is half it's size, but has twice as much crops, plus cattle pens, oven, kiln and room for a chicken coop. The empty spot where the coop should be breaks my heart whenever I look at it

Ah shut up you, I am trying to prove a point here ;-)

Also I like to have some space, makes navigating more easy. This place is already too small for me, need to expand.

Ok... you kind of got off topic. You are both (or if there are more) idiots. Thanks for the answers tho, still having the problem of a lifetime finding food, and I'm not quite sure how the UI works either. Trying to skill up exploration and survival but it's still going like crap. I'll just keep creating new chars untill I get it right I assume. To my second question: How long untill I meet people ingame? Sure it's somewhat entertaining playing alone but some company would be nice. And how on earth do you get string by that shitty taproot?

Finding people in game? Now that is a puzzler.

You have the option of starting at one of the populated points by taking the trap door into a settled area. Unfortunately most of those seem to be de-populated and may be full of rotted pallisades and abandoned claims without your being able to meet people. Try going on irc and asking if anyone is around at Brodgar (or wherever you chose for your starting point) Try wandering around and hope that someone friendly is logged on in the area. It's not easy. Trouble is the people who are starting at RoB and other points similar nowadays are only starting there because it is the fastest jumping off point to get somewhere else.

So, suppose you are in the wilderness, wondering how to find anyone?

The waterways are the main transportation routes in this game. Wandering through the forest is unlikely to result in encountering people instead of bears. Steadily strolling along the river banks is apt to bring you eventually to a) someone also using the river as a road, b) someone fishing, c) an abandoned boat d) a started boat -check out those little signposts where trees appear to have been cut. I have found started boats several times before my new characters had wheelmaking and was able to get fast and cheap transportation as a result- e)someone's abandoned unclaimed settlement with lots of crops left in the unharvested fields and f)a grassland of some nature with better food supplies than a plain coniferous forest. This list is roughly in reverse order of probability.

But keep in mind that H & H is in alpha and has only around 100 people playing during fairly peak hours on the weekend and during busy times. We don't remotely have the player base of an established advertised game. There is a sizeable population of non-anglophones which limits the possiblity of useful encounters even more. You may very well end up in an area where you can't meet anyone since the map is huge and there may be no-one there, especially if you are on an island. Honestly, your best bet is to ask around on the forum and on irc.

You need to know the hearth secret of someone else to generate a character beside their hearthfire. Ask if there is anyone in an interesting spot who wants neighbours or friends, and who will be willing to tell you their hearth secret. -Hearth secrets can be changed and anyone who kins you to help get you started can unkin you so they are not taking on a huge risk by befriending you.
