Any tips for prospecting are welcome.

Try caves, mines in them are easier to miss, so there's a better chance there's still some left. And stay away from rivers, they have a lot of traffic so mines near them get found sooner.

Just be aware that mining in caves is a major suck. You can't build carts in mines or caves to hail shit out, nor build chests or cupboards to store things. Effectively you have to walk your fat ass all the way through a cave, carrying a cupboard / chest (or boat with 2 cupboards / chests) to your mining spot every time you want to mine anything other than what your inventory can hold.

You can carry your hearth into the mine, right? I haven't actually tried it, but I'm guessing yes. If it's possible, just build the smelters by your village idol and port back and forth.

What happens if you log out in a cave while carrying your hearth? Is it destroyed or what?

I find that 25 PER / 50 Exploration is excellent for finding a backpack full of it on a wander through the woods nearby where I'm currently settled.
