What type of terrain, why you like it, and maybe why you dislike other terrain.
I settled down on some grassland, within spitting distance of a river, yet not so close as to attract unwanted attention.
Advantages:
- being able to run around without getting tired as fast as on forest terrain
- apple and hazle-nut trees (good food source for newbies)
- flocks of chicken (yet another good food source for newbies)
- herds of mouflons and aurochs (handy later on, if you plan on taming some; you can feed them four-leaf clover (which, coincidentally, also only grows on grassland) to get milk and wool, without having to tame them)
- it's easier to spot most plants on grassland, as there are few things that could obscure them
- the terrain is likely to attract other players
Disadvantages:
- few trees, so setting up camp close to the forest edge is recommended
- the terrain is likely to attract other players (possible griefers)
just my two cents

EDIT: Forgot one detail: a water source is a must-have. So finding a well-spot before setting up the real thing is recommended, since filling a tanning tub requires six buckets full of water.
