You can only fish places where you see fish jumping in the water. Also, if you fidn grassland, heath or moor,there is chicken spawns, they're not very fast and a good food source early on.

Ah.
I'm digging for clay in the shallows, and I only found it once, but for some reason I still get LP when I dig and don't find any. Weird.
