There is a few little man icons on the top left of the client and in Ender's client you can use Ctrl + R To toggle the movement settings.
There are some terrains that affect your movement options and the amount of stamina available also limits your sprinting.

To add onto that, you cannot sprint on all terrain types. Swamps, for example, will prevent you from sprinting. As will shallow water, thickets, and forests (If my memory doesn't fail me.)

You can sprint just fine on grassland, paved tiles, mudflats, etc..

Can someone explain exactly what a "bug ram" is?

Of course it's the use of a bug to make it easier to ram into someones place, but what does it do just reduce the time it takes for a ram to set?

(Don't want specifics, just curious.)

You essentially reduce repair dry time to 0 so that you can move a ram indefinitely as long as it is kept repaired.

Using it is the only way, sorry. Do a test batch with trash materials and use a formula to work out the cauldron as the missing variable.

Ye Gods, the lag!!!

Is this periodic? Something everyone is subject to? Does anyone know why it is occurring? Is there anyway to make it stop?

Everyone is subject to it. This thread will enlighten you as to what's going on.
