Ruins are decayed/decaying buildings from a dead village claim or off of a personal claim. It's called probability. You likely just need to explore more and further out.

could you post a screen shot so we can identify these "ruins"? It may be the Ring of Brodgar you've ran across, which is always at the center of the world.

That's quite a monumental task and, dare I say, possibly not viable to answer here due to its complexity. Villages must take into account not only their economic and governmental structures but must decide on ideal infrastructure and layout. You also need to cater to village size and online activity and skill of each player. Finding a balance for all of this and formulating into a refined and useful guide is rather quite difficult to do. For example: a communal, egalitarian village designed with shared farming space and storage might work great for a group of five friends but throw in just a couple of unknown individuals and the entire village structure may very well collapse.

In short, a rather good idea but how does one even begin to tackle this without either being too broad or overwhelmed by the multidimensional requirements of such a guide?

Some may prefer the waterskin over the flask for uses such as swimming, running away from or chasing people.

if I claim an area with people sleeping inside a house will they be able to take things in the house when they log in? they built the house to cover the cave I found which I was going to leave for anyone to use...but they didn't want to share so I'm claiming it so they can't use it

If you place a claim covering the entrance of the building, it officially becomes your building, everything inside becomes yours, and if anyone attempts to take or destroy it, they leave scents that can allow them to be summoned.

If you wanted to be sure nobody else could block it, you should have placed your claim in such a way that nobody else could claim the entrance to the cave, either. You'd need to do the same thing inside, which really isn't possible or practical due to the width of most cave entrances. (Note: you could place it far enough in that a person would have to turn on criminal acts to cross, but wouldn't need any black skills to enter or exit the cave. The person would still leave trespassing scents either way.) All claims need a 5 tile buffer between claims of the same type. (You can even apply those rules to grief others.)
