Can you actually hearth before they agro you? I figured it would have worked like summoning, where agro is drawn the moment you summon a guy.

I don't know about that. Right now, Im extremely reluctant of mining because of the threat of trolls.

:S I can tell you, with roughly 2-3 people mining out a huge cave system, including lower layers; we've never ever seen any indication of a troll. I'm not going to post pics (lazy) but I swear we've mined out at least 2-3k tiles by now. If you die to a troll because you're mining layer 1, I'd be astonished. Pretty sure they just spawn in mined out areas like rams and cows only spawn on grasslands, so even if they see you (not sure if they can see through the unmined black walls?) you'll have time to sprint back to your exit or hearth out with a hotkey.
