I'm surprised that no one has brought up the Eve Online model of safe and free for all zones.

You start out in a safe territory controlled and patrolled by an NPC government. Rewards are low but it is a safe place for newcomers to learn and develop for a while.

The free area is not only more lucrative as far as what you can find there but it is where many of the more fun game elements are (territory, wars, death, glory etc..). If a player wants to experience any of this, he has to leave the safety of the NPC areas.

So far I haven't seen another solution does a better job of making PVPers happy and preventing newbies from rage quitting their first day of play. The only people who loose are the high levels who like to grief newbies and really, such players need to grow a pair and pick fights on their own level anyways. :D

in my opinion we don't need those people testing the game and making terrible suggestions anyways

so far i see that rage quitters quit whenever they rage, not just their first day.
look at yourself, you havent quit either :) and are posting instead cause you like this game.

a better job of making PVPers happy and protecting newbies will be dependent on us, players, who survive. i believe that is the concept here and many vet players have done so till now. its not happening yet since the world is still new with big changes.

however, i gotta admit that i was lucky to have started this game on w3 when things were a lot calmer than now. (and later on i was lucky to be allowed to settle in a peaceful area, thanks to nice vet players who have managed to make it possible.)

To be honest here, this game is really two faced. Amazing combat/griefing/pvp system imo, and an amazing crafting system. People come for one or the other usually, and get forced to dabble in both for the sake of playing the game.

Specifically speaking, a 1x1 or a 2x2 supergrid of the world in full peace mode (easy fix being disabling the ability to learn any black skills other than tresspassing or something along those lines) might generate revenue to support itself. Lots of people like this game for the grind/Q whoring. Look at farmville lol, it has how many players?

I wouldn't want to play there, griefing could still happen I'm sure (probably claim dropping or something), but other people would. If there's enough people who'd like it to support their own server, why not? Casual gamers are making up an increasingly larger portion of game revenue.

Yeah, I think what people are missing is that griefing can always happen. Killing is only the most obvious form. Alt hearth firing someones hearth fire, all kinds of horrible shit lol.

For such a small world a centra teleport for stuck players would take care of it... but yeah it's not gonna happen. Just saying there's room on the interwebz for a game like this carebear style.

In light of this discussion I noticed this post by Jorb. He points out quite nicely that even a world with violence removed would still be filled with conflict. And denied violence, those who want something would merely become slightly more creative in their attacks.

Really opened my eyes to the game to be honest.

That post was already linked on page 2 of this thread. It gets linked in all the anti-violence threads.
