Killing deers and bears for your First Village claim can be frustrating. I went through that also.

If you want to trade (other than local neighbours), village idol should be your first priority thus..

1. Build a boat
2. Get a good sling (string from forage, i can typically get average of 30ish). Level survival to 30+ (this softcaps string foraged and sling quality)
3. Level up MM to maybe 30-50. (markmanship)
4. Leather can be incrementally increased (fox, boar,deer, etc) Use the best water, tub you can find. Tub quality is increased with better saw (from bones) Need to up carpentry.
5. With q30 sling and 30mm, you might be able to slay a deer but it requires patience. Remember to box them up alone. Do not let other deer heal them. Then pepper the solo FENCED UP deer from a boat till its dead. This make sure it can't escape your line of sight from the river boat.
6. With deer leather, and bones, its time to UP your tanning tub (by getting a better bone saw) and sling (via better leather).
7. Now you just need to find and kill 1 bear. You can't fence this up so you might need to be 'courageous'). Pepper from boat. When it runs away, deaggro it and shot it once more, it will return to you (make sure u run back to your boat). Then repeat till its dead. There might be the trick of shooting it just after it 'twitches' but i personally never tried it before.

Forget about meleeing dangerous animals. It takes too much investment (UA>100) on your part. You don't need to 1 shot deer/bear. You just need patience and luck. I hunted them with q33 sling long time ago. My first deer kill (via sling) was a big achievement for me then. (the above maybe took me 2 weeks of playing)

I was happily hunting deer and bears with 10 UA and my bare fists on the first day of w5. It's not too hard at all and just involves using twitches a lot. You also need to fence bears in, as archaic as that is.
