Could you please explain this in very simple terms. I have tried to google this filesystem thing and haven't gotten a clear understanding of what it is. Maybe a short explanation why its so hard to pinpoint the issue that causes the lag. All the explanations I find are some technical explanations with technical terms explaining other technical stuff.

You have a flat - one large room - now you may drop all your stuff just somewhere in that room - your brain holds the information at what spot you dropped what if you want to retrieve it again...not an easy task - that's why you do rooms with cups in it - to sort your stuff - so your brain can handle it easier...now imagine your flat is a computer, rooms are the harddisks and cups are folders - now there has to be a brain that knows where what is when needed - the filesystem... (very very simplified picture as the filesystem has lots more to do - like taking the part of your mom or gf reminding you to clean up)
