Join date doesn't matter. You could have been playing two years and never posted, so when you make that first post, that's when it shows. Still... quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, must be a duck.
Sevenless was suggesting a method for minimizing the hunter's exposure. High quality slings and bows are the best way to do that. When hunting with ranged weapons, pushing Perception up helps, too, as the damage formula takes into account the shooters PERC and the defenders AGI (believe bears have 200, deer 100). It's really not that hard to get a high quality sling. The hard part is getting the good axe (q50+) so you can have high enough leather and strings.
Just because YOU choose not to do certain activities doesn't eliminate that as an option. Part of providing good help is to let players know of all the good options (and sometimes even the bad ones). It's not hard to set up trade as a hermit. The deer will be the hardest part. (If jorbtar ever gets animal AI fixed properly, it might be near impossible for a single player that don't know all the combat tricks.)
