I keep getting an issue where I try to use sidestep for combat advantage but the animal hits me and lowers combat advantage again. Is it just a question of raising unarmed higher or what? I don't get what i'm doing wrong.

You get these things sure:
-The animal(s) is(are) completely surrounded with signs so they can't reach you if you move a bit away.
-You can reach an animal by going 'between' 2 signs.

When those 2 things are true, then, when you see the animal attempt to move towards you a bit (twitch), then hurry and use sidestep on it by going between the signs where it is and using sidestep then moving back.

Yeah I set it all the fencing up like in the wiki.

But the timing of using sidestep is so slow. It takes a good few seconds before it even activates. By then i'm hit at least once, cancelling out the advantage. I'll try it but I find it hard to imagine that i'll get one in even just after a twitch.

You mean cooldown? Because it doesn't take seconds until it activates. Try waiting until your cooldown is gone.

Well I try using it the first time and nothing happens to the advantage. Then this purple bar comes down and then it increases my advantage, after i've already lost 2 more.

Okay, I fenced up a whole herd. Did everything, but I wasn't looking when I tried to tame the beast so I don't know what number its at. The mouflon follows me around so I'm guessing it worked, but its been like an hour and it hasn't attacked back. Its probably due to me attacking it or using Call down the Thunder, but its still taking forever (even when I don't attack) what should I do now? I really need to wool for gauze! I gotta go in like an hour so I guess its no wool D:

Best to do is fence them all and keep them all near the herd. When you fire off Quell the Beast, you wander off screen until they all drop aggro. At that point, go back to the herd and aggro ONE OF THE OTHER ANIMALS, NOT THE ONE YOU'RE TAMING. This greatly shortcuts the process and cuts it down to under 30 minutes per animal you want to tame (faster the higher AGI and UA you have and better you get at it).

Animals are known to bug up (not sure if it is a bug or not) and not reaggro in a reasonable time. If it's tamed, it turns into a sheep.

Also, if you are counting, you don't need to see the number. It always increments by 20 and only goes down if you actually hit or damage it.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Thanks, that helps a lot! After reading a few pages of this thread (which I probably should have done from the start) I also realized that my friend aggroed it too. I have a bad experience with the animals in this game heheh. On my first character I sling shot an Auroch, not knowing the herd would attack me, and died. Right now its all fine (I even have a base over where I died) and I've been killing boars, mouflon, and auroch all around. Anyways thanks.
