This is all pretty well detailed in Dataslycer's guide stickied at the top of the forum. He provides a guide for each of the animals and some of the easier to learn techniques in killing them.

Just to confirm, does a higher quality curiosity give increased LP (and vice-versa for lower quality curiosities)? For example, am I going to get 75lp from a q15 cone cow and 25lp from a q5 cone cow instead of the base 50lp?

yes better quality curiosity give more LP, the wiki is just the base LP for a quality 10 item, I think Q35 is times 2 and Q90 is times 3 the LP gain but I am likely wrong so please correct me.

It's a sqrt function, so 10=1x, 40=2x, 90=3x, etc.

In other words: sqrt (q / 10). That pretty much goes for everything in game.

Almost everywhere around me, I see players setting up to palisade entire islands. While this looks like a good idea, I wonder if in the long run it can make you a gigantic target. Why, aside from the obvious nodes and resources, would a player wish to do this?

It's generally good to make your walls much larger than your needed working area, 1 to leave room for expansion, and 2 because the area of sight in HnH is about 25 tiles meaning that someone standing at the edge of your wall could shoot at your characters if their working area is within that distance from the wall.

It's actually over 40 tiles away from your character and you can shoot up to 51 tiles away. (Just checked the first, and latter was posted earlier on a question about shooting range.)

Thanks for the hasty response.
