Another thing to consider when using a pick axe is that it consumes (approximately?) twice as much stamina, so you may be better off using a stone axe if the quality is of enough difference.
first chance I've gotten to get to the mine with my pickaxe, I can't mine half the stuff I could before, and the stuff I can goes about the same speed...just takes alot more stamina(hourglass goes through twice and too tired to mine versus 8 or more times with stone axe). I guess quality is a bit more important when it comes to mining.
