(I don't think anyone has provided any numbers on this.) Mining Ability is calculated as the geometric mean of your Strength and the tool quality you have equipped or Ability = sqrt (tool q * Str). A pick axe is preferable as it will mine much faster than a stone axe (factor of 3 if I recall) when quality is equal. You might not be able to mine with a low Q pick compared to a medium to high Q stone axe, though.

Another thing to consider when using a pick axe is that it consumes (approximately?) twice as much stamina, so you may be better off using a stone axe if the quality is of enough difference.

first chance I've gotten to get to the mine with my pickaxe, I can't mine half the stuff I could before, and the stuff I can goes about the same speed...just takes alot more stamina(hourglass goes through twice and too tired to mine versus 8 or more times with stone axe). I guess quality is a bit more important when it comes to mining.

Are the starting positions for new players completely random or confined to a certain area (i.e. the innermost SG or something)? I'm asking because I previously played W3 and it didn't have anything like the density of hearthfire this world has (at least one per minimap square) or is this simply because there are more players for the same (or less?) space?

I believe it is random, I know I did not start in the center SG, I'm near the top of the map ether the north or northeast. The world is smaller then is was back in world 3, so I guess everyone is closer together no matter what.

q10 ore and cave entrance

Postby Vimred » Thu Nov 03, 2011 5:32 pm

Does q10 ore exists at all? If I'm mining and get tons of q10 stone is there still a chance to get ore?

Also does it have the same probabilities to mine close to a cave entrance versus deeper in the cave itself? I ask this because it seems the further away I go from the cave entrance the harder the stone becomes and I can't mine most of it.

I've read hardness/quality/chance are random but was wondering if being near a cave entrance lowers the chances.

there is Q10 ore but if you are getting stones you are not mining a ore vain so look elsewhere.

Yes I keep snake-ing into the darkness of void hopefully I'll intercept a vein. Or are you saying it's in vein (no pun intended) to keep mining in this entire area if I haven't found anything so far?

Also do you know if mining near a cave entrance lowers the chances?

There may be metal in the cave, if you happen to find rust root go above ground and prospect. (it always checks the level below you) Are you using enders client? if so try pressing ctrl N in dark places. ;)

Yes I'm already using ctrl + N but the emptiness of voidness remains black ;) (by that I mean the black area between cave paths.

Unfortunately I haven't enough PER*expl to get rustroot so at the moment I'm going randomly and hope on luck.

To the risk of sounding repetitive, are the chances of finding the ore near cave entrances the same as elsewhere in the cave?

I'm not a expert but I believe it just shows up randomly in vain so I guess it could be possible, yet I have never found metal that easily myself. :?

How much have you ever mined in this manner without finding ore? I'm already something like 60+ tiles mined away without any ore.
