1) Approximate area of cave tiles walked (like 200x200)
2) Number of "tasted" tiles, i.e. tiles you mined to see if there was any ore
3) Distance between "tasted" tiles (like mined the wall every 40 tiles)
4) Amount of time it took on average using the process

Prospecting is never a waste of LP, but is better spent elsewhere in the early game. It is required to build a minehole, and you can't access L2 and lower without one. However, I probably wouldn't buy it until I started finding rustroots and haven't found a cave with ore in it yet. Spend the LP somewhere more useful first!Vimred wrote:Can you give me an estimate on the following factors in your experience before being able to find ore in caves:

1) I've never kept track. Sometimes I've found ore within a minimap (about 100 tiles) of the cave entrance, other times I've had to go a few in (300-500 tiles)
2-5) Again I don't count. Very early I just try to find the spots where I can mine. With low strength and a low quality tool (usually under q20 stone axe), there's just not a lot you can dig. Even then, I've always been successful finding ore in a cave. Once I do find a spot I can mine, I try every 3-5 tiles because I've seen way too many ore nodes that barely touch the cave wall. Granted some are cut almost straight down the middle by the cave passage, but that's uncommon from my experience. More likely the node is only accessible 3-10 tiles on the wall. (Found a q80+ node in w5 this way on L1. Would have missed it otherwise.) Unless I'm just flat not finding anything, I usually just stick to the cave wall. Even just chipping at the wall till stone or ore takes less time and stamina than trying to dig in.
So far this world: 2 tin nodes (one q10, other q10+) and an iron node (q13 and rising) in three cave systems. All three of those caves are pretty large, so I'm sure there's going to be a lot more ore in them than that.

lol I hate those seashells too, I always get excited to see something then huge disappointment when you actually look...but look for softer areas where you can mine, the red messages will let you know if the way you're going is harder or softer than where you were trying before. be sure to check any stone that drops so you can improve tool quality if you get good stuff. don't stick to 1 area check as much as you can. I didn't check quite as close together as MM, I usually check a spot mine 1-2 spaces in then go on atleast 10-15 spaces(didn't actually count) and try again.
Big thing to remember take water with you when you're looking for a good spot to mine, if you have wine take that too. Kill a bear make yourself a bear cape, even with starting stats you'll get well over 20 strength with an ok survival. if you actually find a spot to mine ore take a chair down to help recover stam without needing to carry all the water...
I guess prospecting has its purposes but early game(all of last world for me) it was a waste. with the abundance of caves in this world it doesn't seem as if it will be any use for a while.
I'm jealous of your q13 iron, I'm upgrading smelter and charcoal for bar quality all I'm finding is q10 ore
