is the amount of ore you can mine from a spot predetermined(generated when map was), or is it randomly generated when you start mining that tile?

I'm not sure but I don't think it's something we can determine or effect either way. So it shouldn't matter?

some tiles I hit once and they break no ore, others I can mine until I have to drink water and get several ore...I know it doesn't seem like it should matter but some days this game hates me. if amount of ore is generated when I start mining a tile then I would rather not mine on days like that.

but thanks for the quick reply

The wiki says that crates are better used inside because they decay quickly. Well, I use cupboards inside and crates outside. Should I switch to urns instead for outside use? Is it an issue that they decay quicker? Do you lose your items in the container if it decays with items in it?

While crates decay quickly, you'll see them as damaged (red) well before they break and scatter your things all over the place. There's not much you really need for outside storage for long term. If you have that much you can't fit it all in one cabin/house, build a second one. You can fit much more in one space that way.

Okay. It's just the few crates that I have out by their respective station (I have OCD so none of this may make sense) to use when ready, i.e. pelts waiting to be dried, dried pelts waiting to be tanned, cooking materials by the oven, clay by the kiln, seeds by the fields, etc. I'll stick with crates then.

ocd or not its how we all are, it just makes life simpler. most containers are ok outside, the big no is cupboards. even with using cupboards outside if they're on paved ground they are far less likely to explode(as with all things on paved ground).

I have yet to see a crate (or any other container not specifically designed for inside use) decay on a claimed and paved tile.

As for your so called OCD, organizing your stuff and maximizing the efficiency of storage and crafting cycles may take some time, but it will save you a lot more time in the long run. While this may seem obsessive to some people, I don't see any thing wrong with it. This is really more a sign of intelligence -> recognising a problem (i.e. unnecessary timesink) and fixing it.
