Decay ticks are random, fastest ive seen is like a week and a half, slowest 3 weeks.

If they are physically seperated they cannot mate. But if there is any gap, even if it's one they would not otherwise pathfind through, it's possible they will mate (if such a gap exists they can do the fence-jump effect to mate).

With a roundpole fence, it might be possible that an animal can be partially in the same tile as the fence, and with another one on the other side being partially in the same tile, it's possible that it detects them as being close enough.

Edit: Cellar stones are probably the best type of pen material, along with troughs. Floating roundpole fence gates are good for walking in carrying a full trough, but leading animals through roundpole fence gates is a pain, especially when you have several small pens in an area. A gap from a temporarily moved cellar stone is something animals can easily pathfind through.

ok they were both close to the fence...guess that explains it, and now I have another mouth to feed  thanks

as far as gates, I use chairs to get in/out you can sit down but animals can't makes it so they have no chance to escape

Question: Do crops grow past the quality of the soil they are planted in? If so, how does the quality of soil effect crop quality?
It hurt itself in its confusion!

Yes they do.
If the seeds planted are less than or equal to the quality of the soil then each generation has a -5 to +5 possible variation. At full Nature you should be seeing +5 crop quality every generation.
If the seeds planted are greater than the quality of the soil then each generation has a -5 to +2 possible variation. At full nature you should be seeing approximately +1 growth rate per generation.

That isn't to say you can't have exceptionally bad or exceptionally good quality yields but on average that should be what you're seeing with sufficient sized fields. As in, a 1x1 plot will not yield very consistent results as opposed to a 25x25 field which will almost always meet the average.

How long does it take for a tree to regrow its appendages? Same as decay rate (~10 days)?

What's the percent chance that an animal kills you dead instead of takes away HHP?

Yes, trees get their harvestables back when a decay tick happens.

I don't know if anyone knows an exact percentage for animal bloodlust but I've always assumed it safe to say 50/50. Sometimes they let you live and sometimes they don't.
