How would one go about converting a tile into forest terrain? Is even this possible?

While trees are growing, they convert grass into forest.

It happens rather randomly and in a small radius only though. So it might take several generations of trees to terraform a larger area.

How do you reduce stamina lost while mining other than with a pickaxe?
wiki: "drains stamina based on the tool used and the hardness of the tile relative to a character's mining ability."
But there is no "mining ability", does it mean strength or smithing?

Mistmonk would really like to know to be able to mine and get some ore to start making metal, currently when it tries to mine the hourglass gets very close to finishing before getting too tired to continue and having to start over. And you can't make a pickaxe without first getting metal, so that's not really an option :|

Mining ability is determined by sqrt(str*pick axe/stone axe q) i believe. So getting more str or a better stone axe/pickaxe will help.

a pickaxe uses far more stamina than a stone axe. if you're mining a tile that you're just able to mine you'll run out of stamina with 1 'hourglass', while a softer tile(with good mining ability) will mine faster than drinking water and use almost no stamina per 'hourglass'. so on top of bmjclark's suggestion of more strength and better tools, a softer node will also help. explore your cave for softer areas unless you're already finding ore, in which case you'll just have to get better.

One more: How safe is placing a claim near a mountain? It seems safer than near water, but mountains also seem like high traffic areas to me. Thoughts?

Placing a claim there isn't an issue. The issue is living there. ;) If it's that big of a concern, I would suggest not even stepping onto a mountain for anything because anyone that's going to screw with your claim is going to screw with you if they see you.

There's less traffic near mountains as the only people that are going to roam the mountain are those that live near there. Whereas the rivers have everyone on them and you can get a wide variety of people that don't even live in the area running up and down them looking for wild game.

mountains are good areas to forage, and if a stone node is present a good place to get a better axe. if you're close to a mountain, but secure(atleast a palisade) you should be ok. the problem with rivers isn't just that they're high traffic areas, but that they're the primary source of transportation in the game...so even though there may be a few people foraging/exploring the mountain near you, far more will find you on a river.

edit: sure post the exact same thing I'm posting while I'm posting it :P

Just one more comment on this:

There's a quality ratio of stone ax:pick ax. While the pick ax drains stamina much faster, it also mines faster. I forget the numbers (as it's not directly 2:1), and it may actually express as a formula better. I've never sat down and worked out the math. However, use the 2:1 as it seems to be a decent estimate.
