It's an online multiplayer game, so everything is saved server side.

How do I know if a female pig/sheep is lactating ?

Postby Roxana » Mon Oct 07, 2013 12:17 am

This is my problem:

When i'm gonna butcher my excess of animals cows/bulls I always follow this algorithm:

1) choose the bull with the best stats
2) kill the other bulls
3) select the best cows (a few of them) and let them breed with the chosen bull in step 1
4) from the rest of the cows, select enough lactating ones to feed the existing offspring
5) butcher the rest of the cows
6) when the best cows gives birth to the new (and better) calves, butcher the old lactating cows of the step 4
7) repeat

you can already see the problem when we want to execute this instructions with sheep or pigs: the step 4 CAN'T BE DONE at all because a hearthling can't milk pigs/sheep to check for lactating females.

I tried to address this issue by pouring cow milk in barrels and placing them in the sheep/pig pen. To my surprise, neither little sheep or piglets drank from those barrels and almost died of starvation (beige bar almost depleted).

I would love to know about any ideas/solutions/opinions that this forum can give me. Many thanks in advance.

The baby animals eat from the food trough like an adult, not from their mother's milk.

Uh, yeah. Don't listen to this guy. There's a reason why a female sheep has a milk quality, because the baby sheep drink from it. Pigs as well. You just can't milk them like cows.

u can right click a bucket over the female cow, if it fills, then it's lactating.

also Christmas is right, your best milk cow should be close to the babies

oh:D sorry, im not honestly sure there is a specific way. If u label ur animals well, you'll know which have bred, once they have that's when theyd be lactating. SO it's just an issue of organising them well I would think.

There is no way of knowing short of labeling the ones you use for breeding. The good news is is that babies will drink from any mother nearby, so you can just put them all with your breeding cows.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
